IELTS vs CELPIP vs PTE Core: Which Should You Take for Canadian Immigration?

Updated July 2026 · 6 min read

All three tests are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, PGWP, and most other English-language immigration requirements. None is inherently "easier" — but the differences in format, speed, and availability make one a much better practical fit depending on your situation.

Quick take: Inside Canada and want fast results? CELPIP. Applying from outside North America? IELTS. Want a fully AI-scored test with a fast turnaround? PTE Core.

The core differences

TestSpeaking formatScoringAvailability
IELTS General TrainingLive interview with a human examinerBands 0–9, human-scoredWorldwide, widest test-centre network
CELPIP GeneralRecorded responses, not live1–12, maps directly to CLBCanada and a few international locations
PTE CoreRecorded responses, AI-scored10–90 scale, converted to CLBWide network, added to IRCC's list in 2025

Why CELPIP appeals to applicants already in Canada

CELPIP was built specifically around the Canadian Language Benchmark system, so a CELPIP score of 7 simply is CLB 7 — no separate conversion table needed. Results also tend to arrive faster than IELTS, and the entirely computer-delivered format (including recorded rather than live speaking) suits people who find a face-to-face interview more stressful than helpful. The trade-off is availability: CELPIP is mainly offered in Canada, so it's rarely the practical choice if you're applying from abroad.

Why IELTS remains the default for applicants outside Canada

IELTS has by far the largest global network of test centres, which matters most if you're applying from outside North America. The live speaking interview is a plus for some test-takers and a source of extra nerves for others — it's worth being honest with yourself about which applies to you. One practical wrinkle: IELTS band requirements aren't uniform across skills at every CLB level, so hitting a target CLB score sometimes means a slightly higher band in one skill than you might expect.

Where PTE Core fits

PTE Core was added to IRCC's accepted test list more recently than IELTS and CELPIP, and it's fully AI-scored across all four skills with generally fast turnaround. If you're comfortable speaking clearly and consistently into a microphone without a live listener, and you want to avoid both a human interview and a Canada-only test, PTE Core is worth a serious look.

A practical way to decide

Whichever you choose, your result is only valid for a limited window before it expires for immigration purposes, so time your test relative to when you actually plan to submit your application.
